In a landmark 1989 episode of The Golden Girls, Blanche’s handsome younger brother, Clayton (Monte Markham) comes for a visit but initially tries to conceal his homosexuality from everyone. Only Sophie (Estelle Getty) almost instantly guesses the truth. “The man is as gay as a picnic basket,” she announces. “Ma, how did you know?” asks Dorothy (Bea Arthur). “I heard him singing in the shower,” Sophia explains — “He’s the only man I ever knew who knows all the words to ‘Send in the Clowns.’ ”
