When I open an issue of Mandate, Honcho, or Playguy in search of a model who’s sure to please present-day readers, I’m often surprised by one of Kristen Bjorn’s men. I’ve seen them all many times in the magazines, of course. But, a few days ago when I opened the April, 1985, issue of Mandate to a page I had bookmarked months earlier, I said, “Why have I waited so long to feature him?” That’s the model below.
It was as if I had come across this man for the first time. One definition of a classic is something that seems fresh each time you encounter it, a painting or a movie, a book or a piece of music you don’t tire of no matter how often you return to it. And each time there’s an element of surprise.
It’s not an exaggeration to call Kristen Bjorn a legendary photographer. He began his career when he was young, and he is still going strong now that he’s older. See for yourself at kristenbjorn.com.
