I’ve done it again — I’ve included a Mandate story, although this time minus last week’s peep-show ads. To separate Kevin’s artwork from the accompanying fiction would have damaged the illustration, which he obviously tailored specifically to this story, titled “The Shirt.”
Kevin used a somewhat different style for the nonfiction article in Bonus Number 50, which posted on January 5, 2024.
The following illustrations by Kevin McPhee accompanied various fiction and nonfiction features in our three magazines, Mandate, Honcho, and Playguy.
Which artist was Kevin McPhee’s primary influence? My guess is Jean Cocteau (1889-1963). Compare the four works below, all by Cocteau, with Kevin’s illustrations, and I believe you’ll agree that without the much older French artist, Kevin’s art would have looked completely different.
