BONUS NUMBER 50: DAVID AND JOHNNY WERE LOVERS, OH LORDY, HOW THEY COULD LOVE...
(Did You Sleep With the Models?)
David and Jonathan, the famous biblical pair — I almost said “couple” — certainly spent a lot of time together at home and away. There is no absolute historical proof that two such men existed, although scholars and historians of the ancient Near East tend to give credence at least to David as one of the kings of Israel.
Tom Horner, who adapted this article from his book Jonathan Loved David: Homosexuality in Biblical Times, is an Episcopal priest and author. I tried to locate him these many years later, but to no avail.
Note the clever intro patter that begins, “Sumerians in the sand did it…” This droll parody of Cole Porter’s suggestive song “Let’s Do It” was dashed off by associate editor Freeman Gunter, whose acquaintance with music from the distant past to the Top Ten made him the doyen of ditties. I laughed when he turned in the copy, and I laughed again just now.
