I wrote my first travel essay after a visit to New Orleans at Easter in 1983; it appeared in Mandate in December of that year. After a trip to Greece in 1984, I wrote my second travelogue and ran it in January 1985. I have modified it somewhat for this reappearance. I couldn’t have guessed that by 1987 I would be writing travel features for a number of magazines or that these assignments would take me to some forty countries.
