Almost as urgent as medical reporting, I realized, was attention to the plight of underrepresented gays. But where to start in the vast encyclopedia of unheard voices? In a sense, of course, before the Internet all gays were unheard except that small minority of us who worked in gay media or who were in the political front lines. Owing to several articles submitted round about the same time, I narrowed the scope to prison and the military.
