Everyone knows, of course, the location of those places long considered this country's gayest. Are they still the gayest, or have demographics shifted since the eighties? Yes, in the sense that gays and lesbians now live safely and happily in many places other than New York, California, and enclaves such as Key West and Provincetown. In this chapter, however, we'll look at...well, let's call them vintage postcards, meaning nostalgic excerpts from the reality of earlier years. From that angle, it's surprising how many unlikely locations turned up in Mandate even then owing to their attractiveness to gays.
