Hey Mr STAGGS - I just subscribed here to read your memoir. Do you have any plans to publish it in book form? I’ve read most of your other books and enjoyed them all. I’m kind of a bibliophile & still enjoy collecting books for my library. But I look forward to reading it here in the meantime. Best of luck, Craig Whitaker PS - congratulations on the Queerty wonderful write up!

Thank you for the compliments. This book will not be published in hard or softcover, one reason being that I could never use so many colorful photos and other illustrations in a traditional book. My feeling is that publishing has become a relic owing to many bad decisions on the part of agents, editors, and publishers. Please continue reading "Did You Sleep With the Models?" here on Substack, and watch for my future posts about the publishing industry and its misfires. And yes, I agree that the Queerty excerpt was terrific! Sam

Haha...I so wish I could have that glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc waiting for you AND me! How nice of you to have asked about me! And, yes, it has been some time ago. It will be good to see you and catch up again. Just as an FYI, my days off are usually Wednesday and Sunday, so obviously I won't be at the store then. I cannot wait to purchase the Elsa Maxwell book as she has always fascinated me. Such a peculiar looking woman that rose to such a huge status in cafe society!

Hi Sam! This is Scott Smitherman. You may or may not remember meeting me, but we met several years ago at the Whole Foods Market Highland Park store where I was working at the time. I talked with you about your (upcoming?) book about Imitation of Life and that you would be or already have interviewed Juanita Moore. Anyway, I found your posts I think on Queerty and have been so fascinated by them that I subscribed today. I'm going back now and reading anything that I missed. By the way, I'm still working for Whole Foods but currently at the Lakewood store. If you are ever in the area, please stop by the wine department and say hello. I would love to catch up with you again. I always enjoyed our talks. Cheers!

Of course I remember you. Quite some time ago, I asked at the store and was told that you were at Lakewood, which is in a part of town that I'm seldom in. What a nice surprise to hear from you. The Elsa Maxwell biography, "Inventing Elsa Maxwell," came out several years ago and before that my "Imitation of Life" making-of book. I will make a special trip to visit you in the WINE DEPARTMENT -- please have a glass of New Zealand Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc waiting -- I'll be thirsty!
